The funnel and kettle shaped depressions in the soil of the Pleie valley, which are filled with coal remnants, still hint today to the presence of humans already during the chalcolithic period (ca 3000 BC).

In the year 973 followed the first mention of the region on the occasion of the forest bestowal by Emperor Otto II to the bishop "Gisilerof Merseburg".

Neukirchen itself is sectioned into the villages of Schiedel, Schweinsburg, Kleinhessen, Naundorf, Kleinreinsdorf, Culten as well as Kniegasse, whereby nobody knows where these villages used to be.
